Lighting up Glasgow with your festive stories!

Sauchiehall Street Christmas Lights 1960

Inspired by Glasgow’s iconic signs - from the Barrowlands to old cinemas and dance halls - and a Glaswegian love of blethering, Bright City brings festive stories to life through animated, neon-style projections. Festive stories gathered from Glasgow residents are transformed into glowing animations, and are projected onto Sauchiehall Street this winter - like overheard conversations brought to life in neon. It’s all part of celebrating Glasgow’s 850th anniversary with heart, humour, and a wee bit of magic.
Bright City Festive Story Archive
Early last month, we started our hunt for personal, funny, silly, heartfelt & nostalgic stories… We invited all Glasgow residents to take part by sharing a festive story via our online submission form. We’ve had loads of responses, from Glaswegians young and old, some new to the city and some who’ve been here for decades. The collected stories have been archived, in full, here: becoming part of Glasgow’s recorded social history for people to read, learn from, and enjoy.
From favourite childhood gifts to daft snow stories, family Christmas traditions to Hogmanay adventures… we’ve loved reading all of the brilliant stories that have been shared, and we hope you will too!

The Aunties - 70s & 80s
- Tell us about a favourite (or memorable) New Years Eve celebration!
The Glasgow tenement parties of the 70s and 80s with all the grown-ups all dolled up and the weans in their Sunday best too. The flat spick and span before the Aunties arrive with their party songs and Babycham to see in the bells. The Uncles and pals first-footing with a lump of coal, a packet of shortbread and their carrie

From the stories we collected, we selected a series of small but vivid moments - funny, touching, relatable, or dream-like - to translate into our designs. With just a few words, simple drawings, and neon-sign-style animation, these personal contributions come to life. Together, these snapshots form a collective portrait of the festive season as experienced by the people who live here. Our aim is to prioritise sentiment over consumerism and celebrate what truly matters to the people of Glasgow during the holidays.
Starting with a storyboard and initial sketches, we then developed these ideas into ‘simple’ vector illustrations. Because the designs had to work effectively as laser projections and capture the feel of glowing neon signs when animated, we refined each drawing to use the fewest possible lines. Achieving the right balance between simplicity and a hand-drawn, human touch proved to be a real challenge! The neon-style animation adds playfulness and energy, helping to convey the personal stories with humour and warmth.
You can watch the full animation here, but for the full effect please visit our installation on Sauchiehall Street (between Renfield Street and Hope Street) 20th November - 3rd January, as part of the Glasgow Christmas Lighting Trail!
